Description
Originally struck in 1651, the Dutch daalder played an important role in commerce in the Americas. The coin was so important that it is considered by many the first silver dollar. For more than two centuries, it dominated commerce in the New World. Now, the Royal Dutch Mint is honoring that history with this restrike. Just 5,000 of these pieces were struck, each one on a 1 oz planchet of .9999 fine silver. The coin is perfect for students of history, as well as those who appreciate the coin’s powerful designs.
Featuring the Historic Lion Rampant Design
The Dutch Lion rampant dominates the obverse. He stands on his hind legs with his tongue out and his tail sticking up as he brandishes his front paws. He is encircled by a Latin inscription, “CONFIDENS DNO NON MOVETVR” (Belief in God is not moved).
On the reverse a knight stands behind a shield. He has his head turned to the right, and his face is not covered by armor. The shield bears the same lion rampant design that appears on the obverse. “MO ARG PRO CON FOE BELG GEL” (Silver Money of the Province of the Netherlands) is inscribed along the rim.
